#7: Bardsley's 22/23/23A Baker Street

"Like most coastal resorts, Brighton is awash with chippies, the majority of which barely merit a mention. Key here is to avoid those places on the seafront. The queues are monstrous, the prices can leave you seriously short-changed and when you finally start eating, you'd be forgiven for thinking they'd given you a kiddie's meal. Stick to places like Bardsley's instead. A family-run business since 1926, Bardsley's may be a short stroll out of town up the London Road but it's well worth the walk. Once there, look beyond the standard dishes and try some of owner Roy's specials instead. From Cornish Blue shark steaks to Scarborough fresh-dressed crab, the range of fish is bewildering and the quality peerless."

#38: Bardsley's of Baker St.

"Set well away from the seafront, near Preston Circus, is Bardsley's, the best chippie-cum-restaurant, in Brighton. Established in 1926, it's a family-run operation, and owner Roy Brown is particularly careful to purchase only line caught cod, which is environmentally friendly and means the fish is in prime condition.
The chips are hand-peeled and cut, and there's a range of pasties for vegetarians. Sensitive to the needs of Brighton's hippy contingent, these are fried separately, from the seafood."

"Fantastic chippy with a really friendly guy who runs the place. It’s always busy and I can see why!"

"My memory goes back to April 1950 when I plucked up the courage to ask a friend of my sister to accompany me to a meal at Bardley's. We were married on Boxing Day 1950 and we continued eating at Bardsley's on a regular basis. One December evening in the year 2000 while enjoying a meal there, my wife remarked that it would be our Golden Wedding on Boxing Day. Roy's immediate reply was: "After Christmas, give us a ring and you can have a celebration dinner on the house."
This we did and we could not have been treated better if we were royalty.
To Roy, Muriel and Neil, thanks for a lovely evening."
